Being happy is a choice that you get to make every day. Happy isn’t the result of good things happening to you, although that doesn’t hurt, it’s the result of appreciating the opportunities, the positive things in your life, and the amazingness of the world around you.
We all have bad days, and we don’t always get what we want – in fact sometimes it seems like we never get what we want, and we rarely control what we get. The only thing we do control is how we choose to think about our situation.
We don’t have to be satisfied with what we have, but we can choose to be satisfied with what we have right now. Learning to accept and be grateful for what you have is a significant part of being happy. You can always want more, and you can choose to work for more, but you don’t need to feel like you are a failure because you don’t have it yet.
Look at money. Most people feel like they don’t have enough money. That’s as true for someone who makes $100,000 a year as it is for someone who makes $10,000 a year. In fact, it’s as true for someone who makes $1 Billion a year – they are always looking to make more. But how much is enough?
The reality is that there is no number that’s enough because as soon as we reach some level, we adjust our lifestyle and expectations, and we want more. I worked with an employee who asked when they were going to get a raise a month after they had received a raise, and they had only received one check with the higher amount. No raise was going to make that employee happy.
It is much easier to focus on what you want, and to do the things you need to do to move forward, if you are not worrying about the things you don’t have.
Look around, and find things you can be happy about:
· Being alive
· Having the chance to learn and grow
· Having people you care about and who care about you
· Being able to see beauty in the world around you
· Being able to work toward your goals
Even if you are currently in a difficult situation, you have the possibility of things getting better.
Decide what you want and do something to move towards it. Whatever it is, it probably isn’t going to track you down, you’re going to have to make the effort to find it. But, as long as there is a possibility that things will get better, or that you will get to where you want to be, you can be happy about that possibility. It’s only when you give up on your dreams that you feel defeated.
There are things all around you that you can be happy about. Be grateful for those things and use that positive feeling to help you move toward the other things you want.
If nothing else, you always have one thing to be happy about – the possibilities of tomorrow.
